I give it two and a half out of five stars (just to use an alternate rating system). Marriette is well outside of my normal fiction genre of the “run & shoot” type book. Therefore, I really enjoyed it. And by saying I enjoyed it, I mean that I didn…

I did like the book but only gave it about a C+. I'll probably read it again just to make certain - I tend to like the books best the second time around. I wanted to focus more on Mariette and her experience more than the sights and sounds around h…

Hi Terry (ATR), Welcome to the bookclub. I have no idea how this works either so we're in it together. I know the feeling of being a non-traditional student and reading textbooks all the time. I went back to school in my 40's and pursued my BS in B…

PEACE2U ALL. I am Terry but I'm also known as apostlethatroks Gomer. I'm a 44-yr old woman who is back in college, studying Mechatronics Engineering, and joined this book club as a welcome distraction from textbooks. I'm also enjoying the opinions o…

I've waited a week to chime in because I was hoping my opinion would change. It has not. I can only give it a C but by no means does the C stand for cynic. I merely felt let down after the review printed on the bottom of the front cover from the New…

This was definitely an interesting read. The description the order and how the sisters lived out their daily routine is very interesting. There are times I wished I could live that way then reality sets in. Was Mariette's experiences real, in her ow…

I would give the book a C+....sorry guys! While Hansen's imagery was outstanding, his character development left me looking for more. As Susie wrote, much of the time there was a lack of dintinguishing personality differences in the nuns. That may…

I think I agree with you Mark-probably about a B for me too. I don't think the character development went deep enough to where you really cared about what happened to most of them. Half the time I wasn't sure which nun was which, because there real…

So how did you like Mariette in Ecstacy? I'd love to hear what you think... My $0.02: I give it a B. There were a lot of things I really liked about the book. Hansen utilizes a beautifully simple writing style. In each section he starts with the s…

Welcome back Mark! Glad to hear that the European tour went so well. :) Looking forwards to starting the Emmaus Readers questions and reading everyone's thoughts on the book.

Thank you guys for bearing with my crazy schedule the last couple of weeks. We had a great time on our European tour. With there being SO many flights, I was able to finish Mariette in Ecstacy (along with a couple of other books!). Thanks to Traci…

I finished the book at work last night. Yep right along with Amy I'm confused. It is like he leaves us hanging. Yeah not my favorite read.

I just finished the book and am still confused, so no worries Wendy lol - there are at least two of us out there! I am hoping that once discussion gets started here some light will be shed on the book for me. I had a hard time following as well. The…

I am on page 74 and I'm just confused. Is anyone else having a hard time understanding what Hansen is talking about or is it just me? I don't think this book is written very smoothly. Maybe I just don't like to jump from one event to another so quic…

Mariette in Ecstacy

Thank you guys for bearing with my crazy schedule the last couple of weeks. We had a great time on our European tour. With there being SO many flights, I was able to finish Mariette in Ecstacy (along with a couple of other books!).

Thanks to Traci for kicking off our discussion :)

Over the next few days, I'll be discussing the book in the forum below. I'll start with a general review, then I'll start working through the discussion questions in The Emmaus Readers.

I look forward to talking abo… Continue

The best laid plans...

Well, I made the big announcement a few weeks ago that we would try to acquire Mariette in Ecstasy by today so we could begin reading and discussing. Hopefully you have your book and are well on your way.

As for me, my book hasn't arrived in the mail yet, even though I ordered it a couple of weeks ago. Oh well.

Feel free to start discussing the book. I will jump in and discuss when I get my copy!

How organized is this thing going to be?

I got this question, more or less, in my inbox today. Figured I'd share the answer with everybody:

Still waiting for my copy of Mariette in Ecstasy :)

I'm planning on letting the book club unfold organically. I'm not going to have any official pace because we're all probably going to be reading at different speeds. If you finish a section of a book and have a comment, start a thread in the forum if there isn't one already.

I'll probably use the blog to post the discussion questions in Emma

Stories Matter

I just re-read the introduction to Emmaus Readers, and it rocked me to the core. Pages ix-xi in particular - the section starting with "stories matter" - pretty much sums up my thoughts on reading fiction. There is some real gold there. Literally. Here are a couple of quotes:

"Stories matter. They can speak truth...When readers learn [this truth] that love is of God; that the Lord our God, the Lord is one; and that while we consider the vastness of all the works of God's fingers, we can know th… Continue

Setting a pace

This is about the fifth incarnation of my online book club idea. Thanks to The Wards and Wendy and Stephanie Fowler who, to my knowledge, are the brave souls who have stuck it out for all of them. One thing that sometimes bogs us down is the pacing.

Bottom line: some people plow through the books, while others take their time. And then there are people like me who read about 6 books in 2 weeks and then don't pick up another for months.

The thought I had this time around is everybody can sort o… Continue

Yo Mark, thanks for creating this community. Didn't take me long to get my page set up as I belong to someone Ning Communities and was familiar with the lay of the land. I look forward to hearing about some good books!
